What Is Addiction?
Addiction is a complex brain-based condition characterized by compulsive substance use or behaviors despite harmful consequences. It's not about willpower or weakness—it's about chemistry, trauma, environment, and pain.
Types of Addiction
- Substance Use: Alcohol, opioids, nicotine, stimulants, etc.
- Behavioral Addictions: Gambling, internet, sex, shopping, etc.
- Many people live with co-occurring mental health disorders or trauma alongside addiction.
Understanding the Cycle
Triggers, cravings, use, guilt, withdrawal, and relapse can all be part of the cycle. This doesn’t mean failure. It means healing is needed—not punishment.
It's Not Your Fault
"The opposite of addiction is not sobriety. It’s connection." — Johann Hari
Shame, isolation, and stigma worsen addiction. Connection, community, and compassion support recovery.
